Ireland regain European championship title

Ireland's Tommy Hanley, the hero of the Strokeplay qualifying, holed the winning putt as the Irish were crowned European champions for the 6th time. The final result against Catalonia was 8.5 to 0.5, which means that Ireland went through the entire Matchplay stages without losing an individual match - the first time that's been achieved in European championship. Catalonia defeated Andorra 5.5 to 3.5 and qualified to play-off with Ireland for the title. Andorra will take the bronze medals. In the other groups, there were 3-2 victories for France over Galicia and for the Basque Country over Switzerland. Galicia defeated Great Britain 3-2 so all three teams finished on 2 points in the 4/5/6th place Group. On a countback of individual winning margins, Great Britain finished 4th, France 5th and Galicia 6th. Norway beat Switzerland to ensure seventh place. Basques wete 8th and Switzerland 9th

Ireland beat Andorra 8.5 to 0.5 in the championship group on Saturday and a win for the Irish against Catalonia would see the Irish regain the title. Great Britain were in pole position in the next Group after a 4-1 verdict over France while Norway looked set for 7th place after a 4-1 win against the Basques.

After foursomes in Group AIreland led France 2.5 to 0.5 and won overall 8.5, while Catalonia beat Galicia in s tie break and Andorra achieved a brilliant win over Great Britain on a countback after a 4.5 each half. Saturday morning Matchplay scores here

France, Galicia and Great Britain contested 4/5/6th place while Norway, Switzerland and Basque played off for 7/8/9th.

Seedings were confirmed during early morning Matchplay at Urduna. France beat  Basque Country 6.5 to 2.5; Galicia defeated Switzerland 7-2 and Andorra 6 overcame Norway 3. France, Galicia and Andorra now play Ireland, Catalonia and Great Britain respectively for places in the European championship Group. A minutes' silence was held in memory of the late Eamonn Birchall (R.I.P.), former P.P.U.I. President and international Pitch and Putt pioneer.

Ireland 9 beat Basque Country 0 in the opening Group A game; Catalonia 9 defeated Switzerland 0 in Group B; GB 6 overcame Norway 3 in Group C. Wins for Ireland against France tomorrow morning, for the Catalans in their encounter with the Galicians and for Great Britain in their likely group decider with the Andorrans would ensure the top seeds contest the European Team Championship Group on Saturday afternoon and Sunday. Matchplay results  here

A team total of 496 (-44) gave Ireland a 29 stroke winning margin in the Strokeplay qualifying round. Ireland were top seeds for Matchplay and faced Basque Country and France in Matchplay Group A. The Irish were seeded to ultimately contest the European championship group with Catalonia and Great Britain. Catalonia finished second in the Strokeplay and played Switzerland and Galicia. Third seeds Great Britain played Norway and Andorra for a place in the European championship group. Ireland's Tommy Hanley fired rounds of 48 and 47 for a 13 under par aggregate of 95 - that's a new all time individual record for the Strokeplay qualifying round. Full scores here

Ireland scored 247 (-23) for the opening 18 holes of the Strokeplay qualifying round. That was six clear of holders Catalonia. Great Britian were third. Full scores here 

The opening ceremony of the European Team Championship 2018 was held at the Hotel Balneario Orduña Plaza on Thursday 21st June. The draw for the strokeplay rounds was made at the opening ceremony and is shown here 09.00 and 12.00
