Ierne, Ireland Ireland

Located just 10 minutes from Dublin City centre in the quiet surroundings of Drumcondra lies the beautiful Ierne Sports & Social club. Established in 1911 and with over 500 members (including at one stage Ireland’s Prime Minister Bertie Ahern and his brother Noel), Ierne was a founder member of the Pitch and Putt Union of Ireland. The club is bustling with life and boasts an array of facilities to cater for all tastes.  The club entrance may be found just across the road from Tolka Park (home of one of Ireland’s leading soccer clubs, Shelbourne F.C.).  The Pitch and Putt course cannot but impress with the grounds so beautifully kept and the greens in majestic condition all year round. The course offers a delightful mix of shots from all elevations, large bunkers, some large trees and a tight boundary between the course and its sizeable car park.

The greens may be small but the course offers a fair challenge from the beginner right through to the experienced players. It’s not just the greens that are fast but the fairways are almost carpet like and like many golf courses there are fairways from tee to green. The two level piece of land facilitates the use of elevations with lots of uphill and downhill pitches. Shortest hole on the course is the Index 16 downhill 1st (with its teebox just outside the imposing clubhouse) at 32 metres.  Completely on the lower level of the course, hole 2 is pretty typical of Ierne's neat fairways and greens. It measures 53 metres and is Index 15. Hole 16 calls for a 48 metres teeshot from the upper tier to the lower tier. By contrast the 9th plays 50 metres uphill in the opposite direction. The iconic 18th requires a 51 metre shot over a gaping front bunker to a green that's overlooked by the clubhouse windows.

Green Fees are available to the general public assuming one plays with a member. Coaching is provided for Beginners. Competitions are held all year round. Adult, Juvenile and Family membership are all available.

Ierne has hosted many major championships including the Irish Strokeplay and Matchplay Championships. The club also hosts two opens and a Scratch Cup each year.

Membership of the Ierne Sports & Social Club, in addition to facilitating entry into Pitch and Putt Ireland, (enabling play both within the club and at opens, both nationally and internationally) affords numerous recreational possibilities. Members also have access to the wonderful gym and to the 4 tables in the snooker room. There are bowling greens too and if you fancy just relaxing, you can enjoy the private bar. The large function room is ideal for those special parties and everyone is invited to the weekly social sessions every Saturday night.

In an area where parking spaces are at a premium, the spacious car park means you can travel in comfort for the game of Pitch and Putt, trip to the gym or visit to the bowling green.
