QUEENSLAND

Wins for Emily and James in State championships

Latest Pitch and Putt News from around the world.

AUSTRALIA - youth shines at Queensland Championships.

Some of Australia's finest junior talent was again on display last weekend at the 8th Queensland Pitch and Putt Championships, held at the Corinda course in Brisbane.

With the Queensland sunshine warming the highly competitive field of over 70 players, it was the younger players who again shone brightly and stamped their mark on this popular event.

Competitors came from far afield, with players from many Australian states as well as young Richard Colonel who flew in from New Zealand just to take part in the under 10 division of the event.

Much focus was on the Open mens division where Canberra's James Rogerson was looking to create history with a record fourth consecutive State championship in the one year.Rogerson, who had already collected the ACT, New South Wales and South Australian titles in 2007 survived a close battle with local players to draw away in the last round and notch his record 4th State championship - an extraordinary feat.

In the ladies division all eyes were on current Australian Ladies Champion, Sarah Atley, and 13 year old Emily McLennan.Emily took command of the event early with a strong showing in Saturdays 36 holes and was never seriously threatened as she powered away to a 10 stroke win over fellow local teenagers Melanie Dinjaski and Atley with a 9 stroke under par performance.

Other notable efforts over the weekend were the extraordinary 2 over par effort from Chris Jimanez to win the under 10 division. Chris's opening round of 53 would have seen him placed equal 8th on the opening day if he had been playing with the adult males. Bedecked in golf shoes, glove and the latest gear, the diminutive Jimanez looked every part a star of the future and will be no doubt be leading the charge of Australian pitch and putt in 10 years time.

Another memorable tussle saw 13 yrd old boys Jake Young and Jack Tetsworth play out an epic sub par battle in their quest for the under 18 division title with South Australian, Alex Borg, coming a strong third.

The superbly run Queensland Championship is a showcase of Australia's up and coming talent and it did not disappoint with exceptional talent on display in a tremendous battle between the young and "less young" generations.

Congratulations must go to Wade Ruffin the course owner, manager Tony Young and their staff who made the visitors feel most welcome and turned on the sun for us after a week of rain. Hopefully over time this event will attract players from all over the Asia - Pacific region and draw the cream of the region to sunny Queensland in what is fast becoming one of the gala Pitch and Putt events in the southern hemisphere.

Corinda's strong turnout of local stars saw them easily win the club section of the National rankings for this event as they blasted a record total of 339.8 points and launched themselves into 2nd placed behind Canberra International. Setting records with both their mens and women teams Corinda is now firmly placed as we approach the Triple Crown and its events which attract double points.

In the mens rankings Rogerson cemented his spot in first place whilst Wagga's Leon Brown and Canberra's Arthur Jelly are separated by only one point in 2nd and 3rd.

In the Ladies, Canberra's Sandra Hutchison retains her lead but the three Corinda schoolgirls propelled themselves into the top 10 with McLenna poised in 5th place, only one win away from top spot.

The battle for national club supremacy for 2007 looks like being close to the very end...
