Irish Open 2020

Pat Malone wins on fifteen under par 93.

Pat Malone from the Custume club in Athlone won the VII Irish Open at Lough Owel. The Westmeath Inter-County star added a 48 in the final round to his brilliant 45 on Saturday to post a 36 hole aggregate of 15 under par 93. That saw him home by two strokes from a group of three players on 95. Dean Grannell from the St. Patrick's club in Enniscorthy took second on the back 18 tiebreaker with a brilliant closing round of 46. Next was Westmeath Intermediate Strokeplay champion from the host club Dean Dinnegan (47+48). 2013 World Strokeplay champion John Walsh scored 49 on Sunday for his 95. Eamon Gibney (Castletown), winner of the Irish Open six years ago, posted 48 on Sunday for a 97 tally to pip his young clubmate Evan Carry by a shot for fifth.

Sarah O’Neill (Collins) won the Irish Ladies Open at Lough Owel with a two round tally of 110. 2019 All Ireland Ladies Matchplay Nett Cup winner Sarah produced a fine 53 on Sunday to add to her opening round of 57 and that was good enough for a two stroke win over Liz Quinn (Collinstown). Liz, who was consistency personified (56+56), took second place by seven shots from Cork Strokeplay champion Sarah McGrath (Fermoy).

Barry Morrissey (Bishopstown) carded rounds of 51 and 50 to take the senior event by one stroke from European Over 55 Strokeplay champion Anto Kavanagh (Bellewstown) with Tipperary players Sean Minogue (Riverdale) and Brian O'Flynn (Tipperary Hills) just another shot back.

Pat Malone led overnight on nine under par 45. Malone took a one stroke lead into Sunday's second and final round at Lough Owel. John Walsh (Collins) and 2019 Leinster Strokeplay winner Peter Reilly (Killineer) were tied for second on 46. The Dinnegans of the host club, Dean and Mick, were next best on 47. The ladies leaderboard was also tightly bunched. Leader was multiple international open victor Liz Quinn (Collinstown) who fired a 56. Liz was but a single stroke clear of a group of three players - Louise Grace (R.G.S.C.), Sarah McGrath (Fermoy) and Sarah O'Neill (Collins). Mick Dinnegan's 47 was the Best Over 55 score, one ahead of Trim's Paddy Kelly and three clear of Anto Kavanagh (Bellewstown) and Dennis Monaghan (Shandon).
