World Senior (Over 55) Strokeplay Championship
Amador Rodriguez and Breda White win at Verin
The inaugural Senior (Over 55) World Strokeplay championship was held at the Verin Pitch and Putt course in Galicia from April 27th to 29th 2018. The list includes reigning champion John Deeble (Great Britain) and Ireland's Tommy Hanley, winner at the recent Catalan Open.
Amador Rodriguez, who won the over 55 category at last year's World Strokeplay, clinched the inaugural official World Senior Strokeplay championship by two strokes on a soggy day in Galicia. The Catalan scored rounds of 51, 52 and 48 at Verin for an eleven under par 54 hole aggregate of 151. A brilliant closing round of 47 left Josep Martinez (Catalonia) second on 9 under par 153 for the 54 holes. First round leader Weeshie Murphy fired a fantastic 47 on Sunday to post an eight under par total of 154 for third place. Reigning European Seniors (over 55) Strokeplay champion Pacelli Darcy (Ireland) scored a fabulous 46 - the best round of the championship - on Sunday to jump up to 157 alongside José Perez (Catalonia), Pacelli was awarded fourth spot on the tiebreaker.
Breda White (Ireland) won a play-off to become World Seniors (Over 55s) Ladies Strokeplay champion. Breda and Pilar Montero (Catalonia) finished tied on 169 (+7) over regulation play in the ladies championship. Breda held a three stroke lead heading into Sunday's final round but Pilar shot 55 on Sunday to finish level over 54 holes with Breda, who returned a 58 final round. Maria Rosa Perez (Galicia) finished third.
Amador Rodriguez scored Saturday rounds of 51 and 52 at Verin for a five under par 36 hole aggregate of 103. That gave Rodriguez a two shot overnight lead from Ireland's Dennis Monaghan. Dennis fired a splendid second round 50 to be one clear of fellow Irishman Sean Minogue, Josep Martinez (Catalonia) and Tomas Escarda (Galicia) who were all on 106. The group of five players on one under par 107 included the first round leader Weeshie Murphy (Ireland). Breda White (Ireland) was three strokes clear in the ladies championship. Breda carded scores of 56 and 55 for 111. Pilar Montero (Catalonia) shot 114 (58+56).
Ireland's Weeshie Murphy scored a 4 under par 50 to lead the field by a stroke after 18 holes. In joint second place were the Catalans José Saldana and Amador Rodriguez, who both scored 51. Another Catalan Jose Atero carded 52, while no fewer than eight players returned 53. That large group on one under par included the leading Galicians Manuel Santiago and J. Antonio Mosquera alongside Thierry Gendreau (France), Francesc Gaset (Andorra), Toni Armengol (Andorra), Anthony Kavanagh (Ireland), Josep Martinez (Catalonia) and Frank Kristiansen (Norway). Breda White (Ireland) led the ladies championship on 56, two clear of Pilar Montero (Catalonia).
There was a warm-up Matchplay event on Friday afternoon - an all Catalan final saw Oscar Rovira defeat Fidel Soler. The Strokeplay championship was played over 54 holes (3 rounds) from Saturday 28th to Sunday 29th April.
