I World Pairs Championship
Pacelli Darcy and Liam O'Donovan winners at Tambre.
The first ever World Pitch and Putt Pairs championship was played at the Tambre course in Sigueiro near Santiago de Compostella, Galicia, Spain from June 9/11, 2017. Conditions were tricky for Sunday's round of foursomes. Pacelli Darcy holed a short putt for birdie on the final green after a lovely Liam O'Donovan pitch to ensure victory by a shot for the 2014 Catalan International Pairs winners. The Irish pair of O'Donovan and Darcy scored a very solid 50 in the foursomes and their overall tally of 31 under par 239 overhauled their Irish colleagues Tommy Hanley and Kieran Earls who had led by six into the final round. The reigning Catalan International Pairs champions were left to rue four dropped shots during the first nine of their closing 57. Jose Perez Saldana and Carles Perez Gelma (Catalonia) were third on 248.
Catalans Conchi Carballo and Enrique Jaen are World Mixed pairs champions. It was a second international victory in a month for Enrique Jaen who capatained Olympus 1 to the Iberian Teams Cup. Enrique and 2015 Andorra Open winner Conchi scored 55 on Sunday to post a 90 hole aggregate of 266. That ensured a three stroke win over the Dutch combination of Esther de Schiffart and Maurits Rangkouw, who led overnight on 210.
It was a super Saturday for Kieran Earls and Tommy Hanley in the World Pairs. Hanley and Earls scored a fantastic 40 for the fourball round and led overnight by six from their Irish counterparts Liam O'Donovan and Pacelli Darcy. Earls and Hanley's 72 hole aggregate was 183 (-33). O'Donovan and Darcy scored 47 in the fourball for their 189 total. Jose Perez Saldana and Carles Perez Gelma (Catalonia) were next best on 195 after a 44 in fourball play. Dutch team Esther de Schiffart and Maurits Rangkouw topped the mixed category on 210, one ahead of Catalans Conchi Carballo and Enrique Jaen.
Ireland's Liam O'Donovan and Pacelli Darcy combined for a 98 aggregate of their two Canada Cup singles scores. The Co. Limerick were then on 20 under par 142. O'Donovan and Darcy's Irish colleagues Tommy Hanley and Kieran Earls were close behind on 143. The reigning Catalan International International pairs champions fired an outstanding 92 in the singles. Jose Perez Saldana and Carles Perez Gelma (Catalonia) totalled 105 in the Canada Cup round and were on 151. That was level with Galicians Marcos Gomez Dominguez and Jacob Carollo Vila and another Irish pairing - Richard O'Flaherty and Richard Jordan.
Friday's play was greensomes. The Irish pairing of Liam O'Donovan and Pacelli Darcy scored a fabulous 10 under par 44 to take a two stroke lead. Next on 46 were the Catalans Jose Perez Saldana and Carles Perez Gelma.
Early leaders were Marcos Gomez Dominguez and Jacob Carollo Vila on -7. The Galician pair were joined on 47 by Catalan Open champion Enric Sanz and Jaune Vidal. Two further Irish groupings sat on 48 - Conor Fahy & Michael Darcy and Richard O'Flaherty & Richard Jordan. Eight pairs were on five under par.
