Angels Navas Fernandez - Profitable return trip to Andorra

We wondered what prompted Angels Navas Fernandez  to attend the Andorra Open rather than the Catalan Ladies Strokeplay championship (an event she contested in 2013, 2014 and 2016), which was played over the same weekend. "Because I like coming to Andorra," purred the new Andorra ladies Open champion, "and enjoy this outstanding course, views and spending time with friends. This is actually my second year playing and I enjoyed it every time."

Transport executive Angels Navas Fernandez finished fourth on her initial trip to the Andorra Open - that 2018 tournament was contested at the Xixerella course. Just 8 kilometres across the country, Angels overcame fellow Catalan Soraya Lassals in a close finish to the 2019 renewal at Ordino.

A four handicapper, Angels regularly campaigns on the courses around Girona - top layouts like Mas Pages, Lloret Papalus, Platja d'Aro, Castello Empuriabrava and Tennis Mora as well as at her home club Gualta. Angels has represented Gualta with distinction in the Catalan Team championships and made the top 20 of the 2016 Catalan Ladies Strokeplay championship.

Angels became pretty familiar with the Ordino course in advance of the Andorra Open. "Yes, I came a few times this summer and I am very happy that I played this tournament here," laughs the new Andorra Open champion, whose closing 61 in a 179 aggregate (60+58+61) saw her outlast Soraya Lassal on the tiebreaker.

Soraya played a superb first round (53) at Ordino and was still leading (by a brace) after two rounds. Yet Angels remained confident before the final round that she could catch Gualta clubmate Soraya. "Yes, because I always believed that I could have a chance." Angel's game plan was simple and effective. "Be confident in my game and myself."

"If I have a chance I would love to play!" enthuses Angels about the likelihood of contesting more international Opens. One thing is certain. She will return to Andorra. "Lastly, I want to say thank you to the people that run the (Andorra Open) tournament. The facilities are amazing and it was a real pleasure to be there."
