Course of the Month

Ferbane, Ireland Ireland

Ferbane is a town on the north bank of the River Brosna in County Offaly, Ireland, between Birr and Athlone at the junction of the N62 and the R436 . The name of the town (An Féar Bán in Irish) is said to come from the white bog cotton which grows in the surrounding Bog of Allen.

Founded in 1967, Ferbane Pitch and Putt Course is situated off the Athlone Road (N62) at the top of Delvin Park.

Non members can pay Green Fees of €5 and play when the course (with its small round greens) is open - normally 10am to 6pm.

The 35 metre Index 16 1st hole is protected by a hedge and a grass bank front left. The Index 7 2nd hole calls for a 62 metre pitch to a green protected by two sand bunkers, front right and front left. Another hedge forms the obstacle on the 36 metre 3rd, which adjoins the tennis court. The Index 13 4th plays 40 metres over a grass bank.

Ferbane's 18th is only a 35 metre shot but is rated Index 2. There's a tree front left and a bank in front of protecting a green that falls away front to back.

The teeshot from the lovely raised tee box on the Index 14 17th must fly 39 metres to a green that slopes from back to front. A small grass mound guards the opening to the target.

No. 15 plays 36 metres slightly uphill and is ranked Index 12 while the tough 16th sometimes plays longer than its58 metres plays long with that front bank to be carried.

Neatly trimmed hedges frame the boundary of this excellent course, situated not far from the centre of town, close to the housing developments of Ballyvora Grove and Knockaulin Drive.
