Course of the Month

Gowran, Ireland Ireland

Gowran is a town located on the eastern side of County Kilkenny, Ireland.

Constructed in 1970 on what was previously a cricket pitch, Gowran Pitch and Putt is an 18 hole course. Close to the centre of town, the course is open to the public seven days a week and green fees are available.

Gowran's 1st is a 41 metre test, which is played over two diagonal grass banks. The tiny 4th green is the target for a 37 metre pitch over a hedge. Hole No. 4 is index 15. The 48 metres 5th is rated as Index 18 even though trees and a bunker must be carried with the teeshot.

The Index 17 8th requires a 49 metre pitch from an elevated teebox over a front bunker. Index 1 hole at Gowran is the 11th. Its 66 metres are fraught with danger including Out of Bounds right, over an electric fence!

The 14th measures just 41 metres but is index 6 due to the teeshot being played over tall trees.  The index 12 17th calls for a 30 metre pitch across an interestingly shaped front bunker. No. 18 plays 54 metres to a green that slopes from front to back. Sand guards the green, front and rear.

Gowran Park Racecourse (home of the famous Thyestes Chase) is located just two kilometres from Gowran Pitch and Putt club.
