Daniel Pullen - Energetic and Enthusiastic new APPA President

Daniel Pullen is finding his feet as President of the Australian Pitch and Putt Association. The Wagga Wagga Pitch and Putt owner is bringing many innovations to the role and Pitch and Putt in Australia is already reaping considerable benefit. Daniel tells us more below.

1. Are you relishing the role as President of the APPA?
Absolutely! It’s been a privilege to serve as President of the Australian Pitch and Putt Association. The role comes with its challenges, but I find immense satisfaction in working towards growing the sport in Australia, fostering community connections, and representing our country on the global stage. I am also looking forward to working with and collaborating with Pitch and Putt courses around Australia to strengthen our network and build the sport.

2. Tell us about your own course project?
I’m proud to oversee operations at Wagga Par 3, When I reopened Wagga Par 3 back in 2022, I was blown away by the amount of work and effort required to bring the course to a playable standard—the fairway grass was knee-high!.  I love that our facility offers a unique combination of Pitch and Putt alongside other golfing opportunities. We’re dedicated to creating a welcoming environment for players of all ages and skill levels. You can learn more about us on our Facebook page or at waggagolfcentre.com.au. Our focus remains on accessibility, community engagement, and growing the sport locally. Over the past two years, we’ve transformed it into an exciting and challenging course, and it’s been incredible to see the progress. The support from the existing playing community was crucial during this rebuild. It’s a testament to the passion and commitment of Dylan Lynch who leads our team, and I’m proud of what we’ve achieved together.

3. What’s your assessment of the current state of Pitch and Putt in Australia?
Pitch and Putt in Australia is currently in a rebuild phase. We are essentially back to a start-up mode, working on revitalizing the Australian Pitch and Putt Association. A significant part of our internal work is focused on bringing APPA into the digital age—establishing systems that enhance connections between courses, players, and the broader community. Our aim is to create a structure that is replicable and sustainable, no matter who leads APPA in the future.

4. How much did you enjoy the trip to Spain for the World Cup?
The trip to Spain was incredible! Not only was it an opportunity to watch the Australian team compete on the world stage, but it also allowed us to experience the camaraderie and passion of the global Pitch and Putt community. The hospitality in El Vendrell was outstanding, and the memories we made will last a lifetime.

5. What has been the feedback of the Australian team post the World Cup?
The feedback from the team has been overwhelmingly positive. They appreciated the opportunity to compete against some of the best players in the world and were inspired by the level of skill and sportsmanship displayed. It’s also been a great learning experience, with valuable takeaways on preparation and strategies for future international tournaments.

6. Australia were World Cup runners-up in 2012. Can you see the Aussies contending again at that level in the future?
Without a doubt! Australia has a strong pool of talent, and with a focus on player development, competitive opportunities, and support, I’m confident we can contend at the highest level again. The dedication I’ve seen from our players gives me great optimism for the future.

7. Will we see the Australian Open back on the Calendar?
Bringing the Australian Open back onto the calendar is a top priority. It’s a cornerstone event for Pitch and Putt in Australia, and we’re currently exploring ways to ensure it becomes a regular, high-profile competition that attracts both domestic and international players.

8. What are your priorities during your term as APPA President?
My primary priorities are:

  • Expanding awareness and participation in Pitch and Putt across Australia.
  • Establishing a stronger competitive structure, from grassroots to elite levels.
  • Strengthening relationships with international bodies like FIPPA to ensure Australia remains an active participant on the global stage.
  • Securing sponsorships and funding to support players, events, and development programs.
  • Bringing APPA into the digital age, creating connections between courses, and building systems that ensure continuity and ease of leadership transition for the future.

9. Any other key messages you wish to impart?
Pitch and Putt has so much to offer as a sport—it’s inclusive, accessible, and incredibly rewarding for players of all skill levels. My message to the global community is that Australia is committed to contributing to the growth of Pitch and Putt both domestically and internationally. To our Australian community, I encourage everyone to get involved, whether it’s as a player, volunteer, or supporter. Together, we can achieve great things.
