CATALAN OPEN - O'DONOVAN'S DAY
Ireland's Liam O'Donovan carded a brilliant 5 under par 49 final round on Sunday to triumph at Teyco l'Ampolla. O'Donovan's ten under par 152 aggregate gave the Co. Limerick native his first international open win (after two thirds and a a second at the Dutch Open along with runner-up in Galicia last year). The four time European team champion just outlasted a wonderful effort by Catalan Xavi Ponsdemenech, who carded a third successive 51 to finish just a single shot behind. Fast finishing Irishman Eamon Gibney was round in 48 on Sunday to place third on 154. Another Irishman Ian Farrelly returned a closing 50 for 4th place on 156, two shots clear of Rinus Huberts (Holland) and Chris Gallagher (Ireland). Ponsdemenech and Huberts were the only non Irish players in the top ten, as recent Catalan dominance in the event was reversed. O'Donovan is the first non Catalan victor since William Buckley in 2004.
Herma Kleinlugtenbeld (Holland) won her sixth ladies international Open (and first in Catalonia since 2004) with a 54 hole total of 174. That was three clear of Marilyn Holmes (Catalonia) and four clear of the evergreen Catalan Pilar Montero. Andorran Pepe Garcia just defeated Anders Christian Juel (Norway) in the senior open.
Xavi Ponsdemenech (Catalonia) led overnight at Teyco l'Ampolla. The leading coach carded consistent rounds of 51 for a six under par aggregate of 102. That gave Ponsdemenech just the minimum margin over Ireland's Ireland's Liam O'Donovan (51+52). Third were Rinus Huberts (Holland), who fired 51+54 and joint first round leader Chris Gallagher (Ireland), who added a 55 to his opening 50. Another pair of Irishmen were poised on 106, the prolific international Open winner Ian Farrelly and Eamon Gibney. Herma Kleinlugtenbeld (Holland) looked primed for another ladies success on 118.
