WORLD STROKEPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP 2009 - Live from the course

18.30 CET Fernando Cano of the Gualta club in Catalonia is the inaugural World Strokeplay champion. Cano fired a brilliant bogey free final round of 48 for an aggregate of 16 under par 146 over 54 holes. That gave Cano (a World Cup winner with Catalonia three years ago) a two shot winning margin in this rain-shortened event. Second was Ireland's No. 1 Ray Murphy, who had led after the first round with a scintillating course record of 45. Murphy closed with a superb 46 (with birdies at the closing three holes) but a second round 57 had left the Cork man with too much to do.

Ray Murphy's Irish colleague John Walsh carded a closing 48 to place third on -12, just ahead of Marc Lloret of Catalonia, who equalled Murphy's course record 45 in the final round and Holland's Patrick Luning, both on -11. Chrissie Byrne (Ireland) won the ladies championship on a one under par 161. Dutch player Herma Kleinlutgenbeld was second, six back. Ireland's Tracey McGrath finished third on 168.

14.30 CET Third Round play has resumed after the rain delay. The championship will now be decided over 54 holes.

12.00 CET Torrential rain has caused a temporary suspension of play during the third round. The organisers are monitoring the situation and further announcements will follow.

18.00 CET Henk Rik Koetsier of Holland) carded a splendid second round of 50 to move into second place on 99.

17.00 CET John Walsh (Ireland) joins the group on 6 under par after a second round 52.

16.00 CET New pace setter early in round two at the World Strokeplay championship is Fernando Cano. Cano, who helped Catalonia to the 2006 World Cup title, fired a brilliant second round 48 to post a ten under par halfway aggregate of 98. Cano currently leads by two from leading Dutch player, Patrick Luning who has been ultra-consistent with two eighteens of 50. Runaway first round leader Ray Murphy (Ireland) putted well below his high standards in an untypical second round of 57. Ray has dropped back to -6 overnight, one shot clear of his fellow Irishman Sean Downes who shot a second round 49.

12.30 CET Ray Murphy has started his second round with a birdie and a bogey. A long putt across the first green put the Irishman ten under par for the World Strokeplay championhip. A poor teeshot at the second cost him only his third missed green of the day. A weak chip led to his first four of the championship. Murphy leads on -9, four clear of fellow Irish player and course specialist Ian Farrelly. Three players sit on four under par - Catalans Fernando Cano and Marc Lloret along with Holland's Patrick Luning. Paul O'Brien (Ireland) is on -3.

10.30 CET Ray Murphy has just holed a two metre birdie putt on La Grande Motte's 18th green to set a new course record 45. That nine under par 45 wll now be a challenging target for the other players in the first Round of the World Strokeplay championship as a brisk breeze has blown up.

09.00 CET Ireland's No. 1 Ray Murphy has has set the inaugural World Pitch and Putt Strokeplay Championship in motion here at La Grande Motte. Murphy and his opening round partner, Dutch ace Rolf Kwant, both parred the opening hole.

Early leaders are Catalans Fernando Cano and Jordi Serra Blanch both on one under par. Cano nearly aced the second hole while Serra Blanch holed a long putt at the first.

The second round will tee-off today at 1.00 with the final two rounds on Sunday.
