Course of the Month

December 2024

Brinny, Ireland Ireland

Pitch and Putt started in the area around 1983 on a course kindly donated to the Community by Mr and Mrs Michael McCarthy of Castlelack. It was a 9-holer and the club typically had about 20 members. Play continued there until 1993.

Early in 1992, it was felt that a larger course was needed. Multinational Schering Plough (whose Irish factory is nearby) were approached and donated six acres. A lot of work was done on a voluntary basis by the likes of Christy and Marie Shiels.

On St. Patrick’s Day 1993, the club moved from Castlelack to Brinny, a distance of about two miles.

Brinny's 18 holes are laid out on the side of a hill, facing south. The course features a wonderful variety of shots, uphill, downhill, across hill and of varying lengths. Total course distance is 825 metres. Longest hole measures 70 metres while there are two that stretch to just 29 metres.

An automatic sprinkler system was installed from day one. Judicious planting of trees, plants and shrubs has led today to a scenic, mature course.

Membership peaked at 125 (100 adults and 25 juveniles), drawn mainly from the Innishannon, Bandon and Ballinhassig catchment areas. It's currently approximately 60 and Brinny is regularly chosen as a host venue for local county competitions.

Brinny was officially opened by the late Bernard Allen RIP, then Ireland's Sports Minister, in August 1995.
