Corkbeg, Ireland
The Whitegate refinery, near Whitegate, Co. Cork is Ireland's only oil refinery. It has a capacity of 75,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd), sufficient to provide 40 percent of Ireland's fuel requirements. It was commissioned in 1959 and was redeveloped several times and produces a range of petroleum products.
Corkbeg Pitch and Putt club was opened in 1968 as part of the Irish Refining Social Club, set up for the benefit of Whitegate Refinery staff. It offers magnificient views of Cork Harbour as well as an excellent quality setting.
Corkbeg Pitch and Putt club shares the Irish Refining Social Club Grounds with the local soccer club Corkbeg A.F.C. Both clubs were founded in the 1960s.
The 1st at Corkbeg measures 59 metres and is Index 2. The pitch must fly to a green set into a hillock. The green falls sharply to the front right. A slightly downhill 47 metre teeshot awaits on the next to a green that slopes from left to right. Views of the refinery and Cork harbour assail the senses as one traverses the opening nine. The index 11 49 metre 4th features a sharp fall to the right of the green. The 64 metre 5th requires a carefully flighted pitch to a large flat green, lying in the shadow of tall trees. The 8th may be relatively short, at 43 metres, but is not easy with a small target, a green that falls away on all sides. Toughest test on the courses is the 68 metre 9th, a long shot to a raised green protected by grass banks.
