Lucan, Co. Dublin, Ireland
The famed course at the 12th lock on the Grand Canal will celebrate 50 years of existence with the hosting of the Irish Matchplay in June 2013.
In March 1963, the Edward Barrett (who ran cruises on the Grand Canal) decided to investigate the possibility of laying out a Pitch and Putt course. Ironically, he saw the potential because the area was adjoined by the popular Hermitage and Lucan Golf Clubs. The course was officially opened in June 1963. The course was run on a commercial basis in the early months until Lucan Ptch and Putt club was born in October 1963.
Lucan's original course was designed back in the sixties by Martin Monaghan. Martin's design remains largely unaltered, a tribute to his skills as a designer, which were in huge demand across the Greater Dublin area.
The Index 2 8th holes features a lengthy pitch to a notoriously difficult green which slopes dramatically from back to front. A small mound fronts the green. The perceived wisdom is try to place the tee shot on the front centre of the green as anything left, right or long could find trouble. A back left pin position makes for a really tough two putt.
Lucan's longest hole is the "Index 1" fifteenth. The pitch is seventy metres from an elevated tee and normally plays against the prevailing wind. The long green which has bunkers to the front and large mounds on both sides, slopes steadily from back to front, which makes for some deceptively fast putts for anybody beyond the hole.
The 18th is an iconic finishing hole which applies pressure to any player coming down the last with a lead. There is no real safe shot from the tee, with a large bunker at the front waiting to gobble up anything even slightly short. The small green is slightly raised which hampers chipping from either side of the green while making chipping from the back a frightening experience. Any pitch that does make it safely to the putting surface will normally result in a relatively short putt and a chance for a closing birdie.
