Millfield, United Kingdom
Millfield is one of the leading UK independent schools for boys and girls, aged 2-18 years. It is a public school, situated in Street, Somerset, England. Many of the 1,400 secondary students are boarders from many different countries. World champion Formula One driver Lando Norris is a past pupil of Millfield as are Romeo Beckham, son of Sir David and Irish tennis ace Conor Niland.
Within the sprawling school complex is a 9-hole Pitch and Putt course. Greens are seeded with MM10 (a high-quality, fine-leaved fescue/bent grass seed mixture), specifically engineered to produce dense, durable putting surfaces.
The course is adjoined by a driving range, a specialist short game area and an indoor Huxley putting green together with an outdoor practice putting facility.
Millfield course is relatively flat but subtle sand bunkering and tall trees make for a tricky layout. A kidney shaped green with a sand trap behind presents a shallow target at the shortish opening hole. A gaping front bunker with a big bank foreshortens the challenging 9th hole. The pond that adjoins the course was once the school swimming pool!
Green fees are £5.50 per person.
Millfield shares its name with one of the first Pitch and Putt courses built as the sport developed in Ireland during the Second World War. The latter course was opened in Millfield, Blackpool, Cork city in 1944. This nine hole course was situated in the grounds of the Sunbeam (a spinning and weaving company) factory. Sadly, it is no more. The land is now occupied by an industrial estate.
