Rochfortbridge, Ireland
Rochfortbridge Pitch & Putt club was established in 1971 and has been providing a sporting and social outlet to members of the community and surrounding areas since then.
The 'Bridge', as it is affectionately known, is one of the long established institutions of Irish Pitch and Putt. It is a challenging course that frequently causes problems to the top players of the sport. Rochfortbridge Pitch and Putt Club has produced national champions, provincial champions and numerous county champions since its foundation. The club strives to continually upgrade the facilities at the course in Derrygreenagh Park, a venue which has hosted numerous Westmeath championships over the years.
There's a relatively rural feel to Rochfortbridge, even though it lies less than a kilometre from the town centre and is close to the residential develeopment, Derrynagreenagh Park. Flowers, attractively presented in tractor tyres, and neat hedges adorn this fine course.
Index One test at Rochfortbridge is the 56 metre 8th, which features a green ringed by grass banks with Out of Bounds lurking to the left of and beyond the target. The first is a gentle Index 15 45 metre opener - a straight pitch over a front grass bank. The course closes with a gentle Index 16 teeshot over what looks like a showjumping hurdle!
Farmland adjoins the Rochfortbridge track, which features tiny round greens. The player is faced with a choice off the 4th tee. The teeshot must be fashioned over a tall hedge or through a small gap in the same hedge. The fifth is a tough 57 metre shot up into the top corner of the course.
The green on the 40 metre 12th slopes sharply from back to front. 15 and 16 play gradually downhill over more hedges.
Rochfortbridge Scratch Cup is a popular early season tournament on the Irish circuit.
