October 2017
Verin, Galicia
Verin Pitch and Putt is one of the top courses in Galicia. Verin lies in the southeast of the province of Ourense and is close to the Portuguese border. Verin has been selected to be the host venue for the inaugural World Over 55 Pitch and Putt Strokeplay championships in 2018.
Verin has been likened to an Irish course and gets off to a gentle 34 metre start. The 4th at 83 metres is Verin's longest hole. Tall trees guard the right side of the 4th fairway, while the left side of the green is protected by sand. A bunker guards the front of the green at the 58 metre 6th. A misplaced tee shot to the right of short (36 metre) 13th could finish Out of Bounds in the neighbouring church grounds. The 80 metre 14th begins a stretch of four very challenging holes. Tall trees shadow the green of the 56 metre 16th. A water hazard lurks behind the green at the 48 metre 18th. That lake is also in the mind of players as they pitch the 47 metre 9th although the large bunker right of the green is probably more of a concern.
Verin's Manuel Santiago Silva is a first-class swing teacher. A practice putting green sits invitingly in front of the well appointed clubhouse. All visitors praise the wonderful hospitality at the club. There are horse riding and archery facilities nearby.
Hugo Espirito emerged as the winner of the 2017 Galician Matchplay championship at Verin. Verin also hosted the 2017 Galician Mixed Pairs championship.
