Victory for Amador Rodriguez

Click here for the final leaderboard from the 2019 Catalan Open, which was played at the Portal del Roc course from 27-28 April 2019. 

World Seniors champion Amador Rodriguez (Catalonia) produced a phenomenal final round of 45 to win the Catalan Open by an impressive five strokes. Rodriguez's 54 hole aggregate was a 16 under par 146. Former champion Enric Sanz (Catalonia) scored 49 on Sunday to jump up to second place on 151.Catalan Oriol Fort was third on 153 with holder Thomas Hanley (Ireland) fourth another shot back. Young Alex Albinyana Torne took fifth slot on the tiebreaker. Overnight leader Gloria Ruiz (Catalonia) held on to retain her ladies title on 165, two clear of Herma Kleinlugtenbeld (Holland) with fellow Catalan Pilar Montero third another stroke behind. Amador Rodriguez was also best senior (Over 55) player but Ireland's Dennis Monaghan displayed his enduring quality to post a closing 52 for his six under par 156 tally to win that category. Felicisimo Aparicio (Catalonia) was next on -5, by virtue of his 51 final round with Pacelli Darcy (Ireland) third. Ireland's Glenn Towler won the best under 18 award on 163.

2013 and 2015 champion Liam O'Donovan (Ireland) took a one stroke lead over a group of three into Sunday's final round. Liam added a second round 52 to a first round of 48 to post 100 (-8) for 36 holes. That was just ahead of Amador Rodriguez (Catalonia) who moved into joint second place, courtesy of a superb second eighteen of 48. Last year's winner Thomas Hanley (Ireland) was also nicely poised on 101, alongside Marcos Gomez of Galicia. A quartet of players on 6 under par 102 included another former Catalan Open victor, Enric Sanz (Catalonia). Catalan Gloria Ruiz looked set to retain her ladies crown. Gloria sat on 107, four clear of fellow Catalan Pilar Montero. In the senior (over 55) category overnight Amador Rodriguez was one clear of Antonio Garcia (Catalonia).

World and European Strokeplay champion Liam O'Donovan fired an opening 48 to lead after 18 holes on six under par. Next were Catalonia's Jordi Saborit and Garrett O'Mahony (Ireland). Both scored 5 under par 49s and held a one stroke advantage over a group of four players that included the holder Thomas Hanley (Ireland). Defending ladies champion Gloria Ruiz (Catalonia) scored an impressive 51 to lead the ladies open by two shots from fellow Catalan Pilar Montero. France's Michel Espanol was one of the group of four on 50 and Espanol led the senior tournament by one from Josep Escabros (Andorra) and Felicisimo Apraricio (Catalonia).

Thirty four players qualified from the domestic qualifying competition on April 12/14th, which was won by Oriol Fort and Javier Garcia.

The Portal del Roc course has not previously hosted the Catalan Open but the Vilanova i la Geltru layout was the host venue for the 2007 FIPPA World Senior Opens, which were won by  Felicisimo Aparicio (men's) and Pilar Montero (ladies).
