Catalan Open 2018

The XII Catalan Open was played at the Vallromanes course on April 7/8, 2018. View the Open tv channel here.

Tommy Hanley (Ireland) closed with a 52 on Sunday to win by three strokes from Emili Sanmartin (Catalonia). Tommy, who was runner-up in the World Pairs last year, posted an 18 under par aggregate of 144. Emili Sanmartin added a final round 51 for his 147 total. World Senior (Over 55) Strokeplay champion Amador Rodriguez (Catalonia) finished third on 150 after a 50 on Sunday. 2014 champion Jordi Saborit (Catalonia) fired a brilliant 45 on Sunday to jump to fourth on 151 on the tiebreaker, ahead of  Europe's successful co-captain at Puerto Velero, Manuel Amor and Ireland's Shane Murphy.

A superb final round of 50 gave Catalonia's Gloria Ruiz a six stroke win in the Ladies Open to retain her title. Gloria finished the tournament on two under par 160, half a dozen clear of overnight leader Abby Nachshon (Catalonia). Amador Rodriguez was a clear winner of the Senior (Over 55s) category, finishing six ahead of fellow Catalan Fidel Soler.

Tommy Hanley spreadeagled the field with a fantastic second round of ten under par 44. That left Hanley 16 under par on 92 and four ahead overnight of first round leader Emili Sanmartin (Catalonia). Amador Rodriguez was two behind Sanmartin on 98 while Ireland's Shane Murphy was fourth with 100. Manuel Amor carded 101. Amador Rodriguez's ten under par score left him in prime position in the Over 55s category, five clear of fellow Catalan Fidel Soler. After a second round 56, Abby Nachson held a three stroke overnight advantage in ladies, with an aggregate of 107 to the 110 of Gloria Ruiz (Catalonia).

Catalan Emili Sanmartin fired a fabulous opening 47 to be the first round leader on 7 under par. Ireland's Tommy Hanley was just a shot behind on 48. Jordi Ninerola (Catalonia) and Shane Murphy (Ireland) were next best on 50. Irishmen Liam O'Donovan (a former winner) and Kieran Earls scored 51 to sit alongside Manuel Amor (Catalonia). Abby Nachson carded an impressive 51 to lead the ladies open on three under par. Abby was joined by Dutch player Esther de Schiffart. Luis Grife (Catalonia) returned 52 to top the seniors (over 55 leaderboard), one ahead of fellow Catalans Amador Rodriguez and Fidel Soler.

The Catalan pre-qualifying tournament was played on March 23rd/25th. Draw here. Final scores here. An additional qualifying round was played on Saturday 31st March as the Vallromanes course was flooded on Saturday 24th March. 42 players qualified. The cut fell at 56. Nine of the eleven players on this score made it through to the Open proper.
