III World Strokeplay Championship

Liam O'Donovan takes title in sudden death

Ireland's Liam O'Donovan is the new World Strokeplay champion. O'Donovan holed a lengthy birdie putt from the front of the first extra hole to defeat reigning champion John Walsh at the Imjelt course in Norway. The pair had tied on 197 for the regulation 54 holes and then finished level again on -1 for the three hole play-off. Walsh birdied the second of the three holes to go ahead but O'Donovan squared matters with a beautiful putt on the next.

Reigning European Strokeplay champion Liam O'Donovan fired a best of the day 47 final round to force the play-off. John Walsh scored a level par 54 on Sunday even though he birdied the opening four holes. Uncharacteriscally, he three putted three times and four putted once.

Current Irish Matchplay champion John Ross Crangle carded 52 on Sunday to fill third slot on 200. Four players scored - 201. With a 48 final round, Roger Wernersen (Norway) finished fourth and World Cup winner Eamon Gibney (Ireland) was fifth after a closing 49. Marcos Dominguez (Galicia) aced the 17th en route to a 50 on Sunday.

Amador Rodriguez (Catalonia) retained his senior (Over 55) World Strokeplay championship title. Amador returned a fine 50 final round to finish on 201 (-15) and two strokes clear of Irishman Pacelli Darcy.

Eleanor Walsh (Ireland) won the ladies title at the World Strokeplay championship in Imjelt, Norway. Eleanor scored 55 in Sunday's final round for a 72 hole aggregate of 220. That gave the former Irish girls champion a six stroke victory over her Irish colleague Breda Lonergan, who shot 59 on Sunday. Maria Corsi (Chile) finished third.

Ireland's John Walsh was on -19 under par 143 after 54 holes and led the 2017 World Strokeplay championship into Sunday's final round. Walsh, who won the title in 2013, returned 49 in the third round at the Imjelt course near Drammen, Norway. The five time Irish champion led by five strokes from John Ross Crangle, who scored 48 in the third round. Switzerland's Benedikt Muff was next on 149.  Liam O'Donovan (Ireland) was on 12 under par, a stroke clear of Marcos Gomez Dominguez (Galicia), Amador Rodriguez (Catalonia) and Ireland's Mark Millar.

The Ladies World Strokeplay championship looked set to be a shootout between Eleanor Walsh and Breda Lonergan. Both players scored 53 in the third round to give Eleanor two shots in hand going into round four. The Irish duo were ahead of Chileans Maria Corsi and Margarita Valenzuela. Catalan Amador Rodriguez (151) led Ireland's Pacelli Darcy in the senior (Over 55) race.
