Xavi Ponsdemenech - exemplary Pairs host at Lloret Papalus
The Catalan International Open Pairs Tournament has rapidly become one of the most popular events on the FIPPA Calendar. That is due in no small measure to its genial host at Lloret Papalus, Xavier Ponsdemenech.
"Now that the IV edition of the international Pairs Invitational tournament is over, I can stand back to reflect on how things played out," reflects Xavi, who has been coach to the Catalan international team for over a decade. Xavi continues, "The general consensus is that the event was a huge success for all involved."
Xavi (who took over the Papalus layout some years ago) and his colleagues at Lloret foster a friendly atmosphere. "The competition had all the ingredients to ensure that the players had a great time, not only competing, but also the social dimension was especially gratifying."
Xavi feels that the varied format is another key component of the event's success. "Over three rounds, players played three different formats for pairs together with a companion: Greensome, Foursomes and Fourball, which required a great deal of trust and confidence in one's partner. Apart from the high level of play of players of different nationalities, this type of event is particularly conducive for a bonding of friendship among the competitors."
Dani Gimenez (Catalonia) and Colin Somers (Ireland) formed an interesting partnership in 2015. Xavi believes this will become a trend. "So much so that many players had been making alliances to mix things up for next year, and we can expect several players to team up with a player of another nationality. Such an initiative would spice things up even more!" relishes Xavi.
And of course, his keen coaching curiosity is piqued. "In fact, several Catalan players would welcome the opportunity to observe and experiment with the different techniques used to strike the ball."
Lloret de Mar is a tourist haven and a visit to southern Europe in November is an enticing prospect for many. Xavi feels the pairs competiton complements this superbly. "It was obvious through the two days of competition that players came to Papalus primarily to enjoy themselves. There literally was a party atmosphere on and off the course." No mean competitor himself (he was third in this year's Catalan open), Xavi is bullish about the unique event he has created. "Beyond doubt, the Pairs Invitational has found its niche as one of the really popular international competitions of the year and many are already looking forward to next year's event."
