Marc Fischer retains Australian Open title
Wagga Wagga was a happy hunting ground in November for Marc Fischer as the Waverley club member bagged his second Australian Open title on the bounce.
Confidence wasn't a problem for Marc Fischer heading into the 2015 Australian Open. "After the relief of finally winning my first title last year, this year I was a lot more confident as I have won every tournament I have entered for the past year." Some record!
The twin pillars of assiduous preparation and a positive mental attitude are working well for Marc right now. "Being on this kind of high plus the hours of practice I have put in all paid off in the end."
The 2015 Australian Open venue wasn't easy. "The Wagga Wagga course is so different to my home course. It has a lot more tree lined fairways, smaller greens but the biggest difference is the cooch grass greens, making putting the biggest challenge so far," reflected the two time Aussie Open winner. The entire field found it tricky, even two World Cup finalists. "Playing with players like James Rogerson, Arthur Jelly and Tom Rickit and watching them miss putts they would normally get showed how hard it was master these greens," explained postman Fischer.
It wasn't just the greens. Marc amplifies, "Another great challenge was the postion and size of some of the trees, deciding whether to punch under them or take them on and try to go over them." Marc Fischer found the correct answer more often than the rest and his level par 216 aggregate for four rounds was nine clear of the field.
What are the prospects for a three in a row? Even James Rogerson hasn't achieved that. Marc Fischer is upbeat. "Looking to next year, the thoughts of the never before done "three-peat" is in the back of my mind, knowing it will be held in Canberra, the home of some of the best players that play this game. To take the title I would have to beat the best on their home course." One senses this ultra confident player, in the form of his life, won't be far away.
Before that, World Cup 2016 looms. Marc, who played for Australia as far back as 1997, would just love to be involved. "I am also hoping to find out the final decision on how Australia will choose a team for the World Cup and if I can qualify to again represent Australia."
