Gonzalo Mendoza - quick Andorra Pairs double (English and Spanish)

Gonzalo Mendoza recently won the Andorra Pairs for the second year in a row - this time partnered by Pau Perez. These are his post-tournament views.

fippa.org (Q.): Tell us how it feels to win the II Andorra Pairs?
Gonzalo Mendoza (A.): Very happy with everything. This year was not easy as some very good players from Catalonia participated and it was a challenge to win in Andorra but winning is always a very special feeling.

Q. It was very close against Jaume Vidal and Enric Sanz?
A. It was a very enjoyable game to play. Both Jaume and Enric demand the very best from you. They are very good players and fight very hard. In foursomes we were tied and in greensome we had a one stroke advantage. It was very close between us.

Q. What decided matters in your favour? 
A. The most important thing was to always have opportunities for birdie and to fight hard. What ultimately led us to victory was the final nine holes where we managed to shoot seven under par.

Q. You won with Joan Jordi Segura last year. Why was it decided not to defend the title with Joan Jordi?
A. I do not have a specific reason. Things went well with Joan Jordi and we will surely try again in the future.

Q. Two wins in a row suggests you are a very good team player. What are the essential components of good teamwork?
A. Yes I like to play in a team and Pau Perez and I complement each other very well. We made just two bogeys during the whole tournament and that consistency is the most important thing. Playing as a team also demands more of you. In case your partner fails, the other has to be there - especially in Greensomes and Foursomes, which are two difficult forms of play.

Q. You scored better in foursomes than greensomes. Why do you think that was?
A. It is so! In Greensomes we played more conservatively because the Xixerella course is quite demanding and our plan was to produce a good score to be in contention for the last round and luckily it went well.

Q. A 45 on Sunday was a fantastic score. What were the highlights?
A. Yes the truth is very good 9 under par, although the beginning of the round was not the most expected since in 5 holes we had done 1 birdie and 1 bogey, it was from hole 6 where we started to fight with Pau , after the bogey of 5 was an alert to get to fight and from there we played the truth that very well, both we and Jaume and Enric played a high level Pitch and Putt and the highlight was that the bogey of 5 and overcoming the disadvantage of 4 strokes we had until that moment

Q. It must have been very pleasing that there was such an increase in the number of participants this year?
A. Yes,  it was a success for us, to be able to count on so many couples. We thank everyone for having made this tournament a very nice event to be able to enjoy and hoping that each year will be better and with more players from other countries.

Q. Will you defend the title next year?
A. Yes, of course I hope to defend the title, I still don’t know who will want to play with me, but I'm sure I'll try again in 2020!

Q. Will you play in the European Strokeplay at Dagenham?
A. I would like to participate. Right now I do not know, I hope I can take part in the Championship although those courses do not adapt to my style of play, but it's always good to compete with the best players.

¿Cómo se siente al ganar los II International Pairs de Andorra?

Muy contento, por todo,  este año no era fácil ya que  han jugado muy buenos jugadores de Catalunya y era un reto poder ganar en Andorra y ganar siempre es una sensación muy especial.

¿Estuvo muy cerca ante Jaume Vidal y Enric Sanz?

Si ha sido una partida muy linda de jugar y tanto Jaume como Enric te exigen al máximo, son muy buenos jugadores y muy luchadores, en foursome quedamos empatados y en greensome nos tomaron ventaja de 1 golpe, siempre hemos estado muy igualados.

Qué aspecto decidió a su favor?

La verdad lo mas importante ha sido estar siempre con opciones de luchar y lo que nos llevo a la victoria fueron los 9 hoyos finales donde hemos conseguido hacer 7 bajo par

Dos victorias consecutivas sugieren que eres un buen jugador de equipo. ¿Cuáles son los componentes esenciales del buen trabajo en equipo?

Si me gusta jugar en equipo y con Pau Perez nos complementamos muy bien, hemos hecho 2 bogueys en todo el Torneo y esa regularidad es lo más importante, jugar en equipo también te exiges más por si tu compañero falla el otro tiene que estar ahí y más en Grennsome y Foursome que son 2 modalidades difícil de jugar.

Has ganadó con Joan Jordi Segura el año pasado. ¿Por qué se decidió no defender el título con Joan Jordi?

No tengo una razón concreta las cosas fueron así y con Joan Jordi seguramente lo volveremos a intentar en el futuro.

Habeis hecho un mejor resultado en foursomes que que en el greensomes. ¿Por qué crees que ha sido así?

Es asi!!! por suerte han sido 2 resultados correctos, igual en Greensome hemos jugado más conservadores porque el campo de Xixerella te exige mucho y la primera opción era hacer un resultado correcto para poder tener opciones para la última ronda y por suerte nos salió bien.

Un 45 el domingo fue un resultado fantástico. ¿Cuáles fueron los aspectos más destacados?

Sí la verdad que está muy bien 9 bajo par, a pesar que el comienzo de la ronda no fue el más esperado ya que en 5 hoyos habíamos hecho 1 berdie y 1 boguey, fue a partir del hoyos 6 donde nos pusimos a luchar con Pau, después del  boguey de 5 fue una alerta para ponernos a luchar y a partir de ahí hemos jugado la verdad que muy bien, tanto nosotros como Jaume y Enric jugamos un Pitch and Putt de alto nivel y el aspecto a destacar fue ese el boguey del 5 y sobrepenernos de la desventaje de 4 golpes que teníamos hasta ese momento.

Ha sido un éxito que haya aumentado el número de participantes este año?

Si fue un éxito para nosotros, poder contar con tantas parejas, agradecer a todos por haber hecho de este Torneo un evento muy lindo de poder disfrutar y esperando que cada año sea mejor y con más  jugadores de otros países.

Defenderás el título el próximo año?

Si por supuesto espero poder defender el título, nose todavía quien querra jugar conmigo pero seguro que lo volveré a intentar en el 2020.

Jugarás el Europeo Strokeplay a Dagenham?

Si me gustaría participar, ahora mismo no lo se, espero poder tomar parte del Torneo aunque esos campos no se adaptan a mi estilo de juego,  pero bueno siempre es bueno competir con los mejores jugadores
