When Antonio Sanchez and Teodoro Fernandez won the Nacho Prada Pairs last year, we sought the thoughts of Teo in the wake of their success. After the pairs success in Andorra this year, Antonio was kind enough to give us this reaction.

 

My expectations were good, as I'd been playing well these past few months, and my partner was even better.

 

Yes, I'd been familiar with it from previous years. I like it because of the difference in difficulty on each hole, and as expected, it was in perfect condition.

 

It's always nice to win, no matter who you win against, but if you win against two great players of the calibre of Manuel Amor and Berenguer Orti, the satisfaction is even greater.

 

The playoff was great, with tension, I think, on everyone's part, since everything is at stake in one hole. On the first hole, when I was putting for par, I felt like I was alone on the course because of the silence and respect shown by the people watching us, and I want to thank them. On the second playoff hole, many people asked me why I had approached and not putted less because I know myself; I don't like to change things when something is working for me. When Teo putted to win the hole and thus the tournament, and the ball went in, it was one of the best feelings you can have in this sport.

 

Yes, we did, but those results don't come along very often; when they do, you have to enjoy them.

 

The turning point in our victory was at the end of the second round when we saw that we were leading the tournament and had a good feeling going into Sunday.

 

We have different styles but a common goal. We've been playing as pairs for 14 years now, and we understand each other without speaking. It's very easy to understand each other when you're playing with your best friend.

 

The plan for Sunday was to play our game and take as few strokes as possible, and if another pair did, it was better to applaud and congratulate them.

 

Yes, we apply our own tactics to each modality. One of the tactics we use in all modality is that we don't care who makes the birdie; the important thing is to make it.

¿Qué expectativas tenías de cara al Torneo Internacional de Parejas de Andorra?
Las expectativas eran buenas ya que estaba jugando bien estos últimos meses y mi compañero aún mejor.

¿Conocías bien el campo Xixerella?
Sí, lo conocía de anteriores años, me gusta por la diferencia de dificultad en cada hoyo y como era de esperar estaba en perfectas condiciones.

Manuel Amor y Berenguer Orti forman una dupla formidable. Debe ser muy gratificante derrotarlos.
Siempre es bonito ganar independientemente contra quien lo hagas, pero sí lo haces contra dos grandísimos jugadores de la talla de Manuel Amor y Berenguer Orti, la satisfacción es aún mayor.

Cuéntanos sobre el desempate.
El desempate fue bonito, con tensión por parte creo que de todos ya que te lo juegas todo en un hoyo. En el hoyo 1 cuando iba a puttear para par tuve la sensación de estar solo en el campo por el silencio y el respeto que demostraron la gente que estaba viéndonos a los cuales quiero dar las gracias. En el segundo hoyo de desempate mucha gente me preguntó por qué había approachado y no putteado menos mi compañero porque ya me conocé, no me gusta cambiar cuando algo te funciona. Cuando Teo putteó para ganar el hoyo y con ello el torneo y la bola entró, es una de las mejores sensaciones que puedes tener en este deporte.

¿Debieron de encajar a la perfección para conseguir 43 golpes en Greensomes?
Sí encajamos bien, pero esos resultados no salen muchas veces, cuando salen tienes que disfrutarlos.

¿Cuál fue el punto de inflexión de tu victoria?
El punto de inflexión de nuestra victoria fue al final de la segunda vuelta cuando vimos que estábamos líderes del torneo y con una buena sensación para competir el domingo.

¿Se complementan tu estilo y el de Teo?
Tenemos estilos diferentes pero con un mismo fin. Ya llevamos 14 años jugando de parejas y nos entendemos sin hablar, es muy fácil entenderse cuando juegas con tu mejor amigo.

Con un golpe de ventaja anoche, ¿cuál era el plan para el domingo?
El plan para el domingo era hacer nuestro juego y hacer los menos golpes posibles, y si otra pareja lo hacía mejor aplaudir y felicitarlos.

¿Se requieren tácticas diferentes para 1) Greensomes, 2) Fourball y 3) Chapman Greensomes?
Sí, a cada modalidad aplicamos nuestra táctica propia, una de las tácticas que utilizamos en todas las modalidades es que no nos importa quien hace el birdie, lo importante es hacerlo.
