A Decade of Catalan Opens - the stats

The Catalan Open reaches a milestone at Roc 3 in 2016.  The April 2-3 event will be the 10th Catalan Open.

The original event at Teia in 2004 was played over 36 holes.  All subsequent opens (beginning with the 2nd Catalan Open in 2008) were played over the now accepted International Open format of 54 holes.

Low 54 hole winning aggregate in the Catalan Open is the 20 under par 142 returned by Ireland's Liam O'Donovan at Lleida in 2015.  Low ladies 54 hole winning total is Abby Nachshon's 159 at Teia two years ago.

Highest winning men's aggregate was returned by Marçal More (Catalonia) at Mas Pages ?in 2011.  Holland's Herma Kleinlugtenbeld won the ladies Catalan Open at Teyco l'Ampolla in 2013 with 174, which is the highest winning total in the nine previous Opens.

Marçal More (Catalonia) has won three Catalan Opens (2008, 2011 and 2012), more than any other player.  Another multiple winner is Liam O'Donovan (Ireland), victor in 2013 and 2015.  Catalonia's Abby Nachshon is a three-time Catalan ladies Open winner (2011, 2012 and 2014).  The other multiple ladies winners are Tracey McGrath (Ireland), champion in 2008 and 2009 and Herma Kleinlugtenbeld (Holland), who triumphed in 2004 and in 2013.

Catalonia's Joan Poch won by six strokes at Lleida in 2009.  That is the biggest winning margin in history.  Jordi Saborit (Catalonia) won the only play-off at Teia in 2014.  Abby Nachshon clinched the 2011 ladies Open by a whopping 12 shot difference at Mas Pages.  Herma Kleinlugtenbeld survived a sudden death decider in the inaugural ladies open at Teia 12 years ago.

Some players have fine Catalan Open records, without actually winning the title.  Ireland's Kieran Earls has twice been runner-up.  Two Catalans - Daniel Gimenez and Xavi Ponsdemenech - have each been second and third.  Marilyn Holmes (Catalonia) has finished ladies runner-up on three occasions and was also third last year.  Pilar Montero (Catalonia) has no fewer than four third place finishes and placed second in  2012.

The Teia and Lleida courses have each hosted the Catalan Open on two occasions.  Roc 3 has never yet hosted the Open but was the venue for the 2007 World Senior Open.  Felicisimo Aparicio won the 2007 Men's Senior Open with a 164 aggregate.  Ladies victor was Pilar Montero on 169.
