Masayoshi Ishii - the new face of Japanese Pitch and Putt

Masayoshi Ishii is the Chairman of Japan Professional Approach Association (JPAA). His association has held tournaments in Japan based on the FIPPA rules, with holes of 90m or less and 18 holes of 1,200m. JPAA has many members already and it`s been increasing month by month. JPAA  currently holds three tournaments per month in Japan, and plans to hold 40 in 2025. JPAA has replaced Japanese Pitch and Putt Association (JPPA) as FIPPA's associate member in Japan, as the latter association has not been active. Masayoshi spoke to FIPPA about his Pitch and Putt perspective and JPAA's expansion plans.

Q. How did you develop an interest in Pitch and Putt?

A. I was drawn to Pitch and Putt because of its accessibility and the depth of its strategic elements. Compared to traditional golf, Pitch and Putt can be played in a shorter time and is enjoyable for a wide range of skill levels, from beginners to advanced players. I was particularly attracted to the emphasis on short game precision, which helps improve technical skills. While Pitch and Putt is still relatively unknown in Japan, it is gaining popularity worldwide, and I see great potential for its future expansion. When I played for the first time, I found it simple yet highly strategic, requiring accuracy with every shot, which made it fascinating. Additionally, since it is easier to start compared to golf, I saw the potential for it to be enjoyed by a broader audience. I want to help promote Pitch and Putt in Japan and introduce its appeal to more people. I plan to contribute to its growth by assisting in its popularization and organizing tournaments.

Q. Tell us about the evolution of the Japan Professional Approach Organization?

A. The organization aims to popularize Pitch and Putt in Japan and improve competition levels by fostering players, hosting tournaments, and developing Pitch and Putt`’s culture. In its first year, the organization had 71 members. This year, we aim to increase that number by 100, contributing to the expansion of Pitch and Putt in Japan. To enhance the level of domestic competitions, we operate in accordance with international standards, limiting hole distances to 90 metres and allowing only three clubs. We actively promote junior programs to train the next generation of players.

By increasing participation in international competitions and strengthening ties with overseas organizations, we are working toward organizing competitions that meet global standards. Moving forward, we will continue developing Pitch and Putt under the guidance of the international organization, aiming to establish a Pitch and Putt environment that meets international standards. We look forward to deepening our cooperation with FIPPA.

Q. Will your Japan Professional Approach Association organization develop specific Pitch and Putt courses or will you always use existing full size golf courses with teeing grounds inserted to abide by FIPPA norms?

A. In the future, we would like to develop dedicated courses. However, for now, we will hold events on existing short courses by setting up designated teeing areas within the 90-metre limit.

Q. Do you think Pitch and Putt has a future in Japan? Why?

A. We believe it has great potential. It has unique characteristics

  • Easy accessibility: With shorter play distances, Pitch & Putt is more beginner-friendly and suitable for juniors and seniors. The limited number of clubs also makes it easy to start.
  • Requires less space: Compared to full-sized golf courses, it requires less space, making it easier to establish facilities even in urban areas.
  • Helps improve technical skills: Since precision in the short game is essential, it also contributes to improving golfers’ overall skills.

Its future potential includes

  • Attracting new players: It serves as a great introductory sport for beginners and juniors, broadening the base of Pitch and Putt enthusiasts. Its appeal as a casual sport for families and friends also contributes to expanding the leisure market.
  • Urban expansion: Since courses can be built in limited spaces, Pitch and Putt has the potential to grow in easily accessible urban areas.
  • Development of international competitions: In some countries, the sport’s popularity is increasing, and the rise of international tournaments could bring further attention to it.
  • Environmental benefits: Maintaining Pitch & Putt courses requires fewer resources compared to golf courses, making it a more sustainable sport.

Pitch and Putt is an attractive sport that balances accessibility and competitive elements. With efforts to attract new golfers and expand in urban areas, we believe it has a bright future. We will continue working on promoting it while keeping an eye on international trends.

What are Japan Professional Approach Association’s plans to develop Pitch and Putt in Japan?

Although Pitch and Putt is an accessible sport, its recognition in Japan remains low, and expanding the player base is essential.

Pitch and Putt is suitable as an introductory sport for juniors and beginners, and we are implementing initiatives for its growth.

Our Key strategies for development include:

  • Facility development and utilization: We will repurpose parts of existing golf courses for Pitch and Putt and create environments where new players can easily experience the sport. Small-scale dedicated courses in urban areas will also be introduced to increase accessibility.
  • Enhancing junior and beginner programs: We will hold junior schools and events to expand the player base. Additionally, more beginner-friendly trial sessions will be organized.
  • Organizing tournaments and promotion: We will increase domestic competitions to enhance recognition as a competitive sport while also fostering top players. Utilizing media and social networks will help attract younger generations.
  • Strengthening ties with international organizations: By learning from successful global examples, we will establish a competition environment that meets international standards and aim for participation in international events.

Facility development, junior training, and tournament organization are crucial for promoting Pitch & Putt in Japan. We will continue working with stakeholders to create a more inclusive environment and drive the sport’s development.

Q. FIPPA has a contact in India that hopes to form a South Asia Pitch and Putt Federation that might encompass Bhutan, Thailand, Indonesia, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Do you believe it would be possible for Japan to form links with this Federation?

A. We believe this initiative is significant for the global growth of the sport. Expanding Pitch and Putt in countries like India, Bhutan, Thailand, Indonesia, Nepal, and Sri Lanka is crucial for its worldwide development.

We are highly interested in exploring opportunities for international collaboration as part of FIPPA. By sharing knowledge on promoting Pitch and Putt and developing junior players, we can create mutual benefits. Potential collaboration could include exchange programs, joint training camps, and cooperation in international tournaments. We will continue to monitor the establishment of the South Asian Pitch and Putt Federation and explore possible ways Japan can contribute. We look forward to further discussions through FIPPA.

Q. Are you pleased to be part of the FIPPA family?

A. We are honoured and fully satisfied to be part of the FIPPA family. Being connected to an international network through FIPPA is highly valuable for Japan’s Pitch and Putt development. We look forward to continuing our cooperation to promote and grow Pitch and Putt..

Q. Do you personally play Pitch and Putt or golf?

A. I believe Pitch and Putt and golf complement each other. I enjoy both and want to share their unique benefits with others.

Q. What is the demographic of the typical competitor in Japan Professional Approach Association tournaments?

A. Most participants are in their 30s to 50s, but recently, younger players and juniors have been increasing. The gender ratio is currently 8:2 (male to female), but we expect more female players to join in the future. We aim to create an environment where diverse players can thrive and enjoy Pitch and Putt.
