Amador Rodriguez - the Pitch and Putt world's Super Senior (English and Spanish)

He may be in the middle of his seventh decade on Planet Earth, but the Amador Rodriguez success story just goes on and on. The Catalan secured the World Senior (Over 55) Strokeplay championship title with a fantastic final round of 48 and it's fair to say that he is thrilled. "(I'm) super excited because not everyone can win a championship of this magnitude," Amador told fippa.org.

Rodriguez played a superb round on Sunday at Verin when holding the lead overnight. He was pleased with his play on the final day. "I liked the concentration I was showing because the truth is that when I occasionally came across the scoreboards of those that were playing ahead of me, I was just super concentrated."

Verin course became very wet on Sunday and that obviously had an impact. "It was raining a lot and we had to leave the course. We were the last group off the first tee and on the 5th or 6th hole we had to stop for 20 minutes because a lot of rain and hail fell. Of course we had to stop for the greens to be swept clear of water and then we played again."

Amador's fellow Catalan Josep Martinez was ultimately his closest challenger. Josep fired a brilliant 47 on Sunday to jump up into second place. "He's a 'crack' player and he made it super difficult (for me!)," laughs Amador. "He already told me that he holds the pressure quite well but ... he's a 'crack' player."

Were there any crises during the final round? Or at any stage during the championship? "Yes, after we restarted following the rain delay, it seemed to me that on the 8th there was so much water. I pitched and I was a little short ... and of course ... between my ball and the flag there was a puddle of water and I could not touch it and I made bogey there ... and that made me very angry. That was the only crisis I had." Crisis averted, Amador marched on for a two stroke victory.

To what to does Amador attribute the extraordinarily high standard of play among seniors (and indeed super seniors)? "I suppose that, now in Catalonia those who help keep the courses in business are the seniors and superseniors. Every morning wherever you go to play, the course is full of superseniors and seniors. I guess that's why, because they play very often, they train."

Amador's tournament schedule for the remainder of 2018 will focus on Catalan events. "(I will play) the Rànquing FCPP, Championships of Catalonia and Matchplay. I won't play the Doubles because I have asked for many holidays and my boss is going to 'kill' me!"

P. ¿Cómo de  emocionado estás después de ganar el World Strokeplay Seniors?

R. Superemocionado porque no todo el mundo puede ganar un campeonato de esta magnitud

P. ¿Jugaste una ronda excelente el domingo cuando mantuviste el liderato de la noche a la mañana? ¿Qué te gustó de tu juego el domingo?

R. Me gustó la concentración que llevaba porque la verdad es que cuando me cruzaba a veces con los carteles de los que iban delante, sólo iba superconcentrado.

P. El campo estaba fue muy húmedo? ¿Cómo decidió este factor ?

R. Cayó una que no veas y encima tuvimos que dejar, yo salí del uno y eramos el último grupo y en el hoyo 5 o 6 tuvimos que parar 20 minutos porque cayó mucho agua y granizo. Claro al llenarse los greens de granizo tuvimos que parar 20 minutos y después volvimos a jugar.

P. Algunas breves palabras sobre Josep Martinez?

R. Es un crack y me lo puso superdifícil. Él ya me lo comentó que aguanta bastante bien la presión pero ….. es un crack.

P. ¿Hubo alguna crisis en tu juego durante la ronda final? ¿O en cualquier etapa del campeonato?

R. Si, en un hoyo, en el momento que paramos, me parece que en el 8 que había tanta agua, tiré y me quedé un poco corto… y claro … entre mi bola y la bandera había un charco de agua y no podía tocarla y ahí hice Bogey… y eso me dio muchísima rabia. Esa fue la única crisis que tuve.

P. El nivel de juego entre los seniors  (y de hecho entre los superseniors) es extraordinariamente alto. ¿A qué se debe atribuir esto?

R. Supongo que ahora en Catalunya los que mantienen los campos son los seniors y superseniors. Todas las mañanas donde vayas está lleno de superseniors y seniors. Supongo que es por eso, porque juegan muy a menudo, entrenan.

P. ¿Qué torneos planeas disputar durante el resto del 2018?

R. El Rànquing, Campeonatos de Catalunya y Matxplay. El Dobles no porque he pedido muchos días de fiesta y mi jefe me va a matar.
