Voyage of my Father - Fernando Morgado (English and Spanish)
Nearly a couple of decades ago, a Chilean medical consultant, Dr. Fernando Morgado (R.I.P.) made his way to the 2001 European Team championship at Lloret. His son Fernando was kind enough to send us his reflections of that trip.
"Greetings from Chile," says Fernando. "I appreciate the opportunity to deliver my memories ... that's what life is about, remembering, learning and continuing the legacy of what is deeply appreciated ... as is the Pitch and Putt."
fippa.org (Q.) Your father visited the European Team Championship in Lloret in 2001. What was the background to that trip?
Fernando Morgado Jun. (A.) In 2001, my Father was the President of the Golf branch of the Medical Club of Chile (Colegio di Medico). At that time the members were going to play the 9-hole course, thinking that it was simply a short-distance golf course. He heard about Pitch and Putt and during his walks on the course he concluded that the course had all the characteristics that define Pitch and Putt. Being a tireless seeker of answers and always wanting to go further in knowledge, he decided to travel to Europe and learn what Pitch and Putt was about - how it was played, what its rules were and above all, who were the Directors of this Sport in the world. I am sure that he also had in mind to found a Chilean Federation with the aim of creating the foundations for the development of this sport.
Q. Was he impressed by what he experienced in Europe?
A. My father participated in many subjects during his life. His tireless mind created new things every day and sought answers where necessary. I think that learning from what he experienced in Lloret 2001, knowing the structure and vision of FIPPA for the future, and sharing his own ideas was undoubtedly a great experience for him. Nor do I doubt that on his return trip he wrote in his notebook everything he had planned to do in Chile. He liked notebooks - he had one for each subject, be it from the Stars, chess, Mozart and many more.
I can only say that Dr. Morgado returned from Lloret leaving behind the word Golf and speaking from that moment only of Pitch and Putt.
Q. What did he do when he got home?
A. He called me on the phone and said "come to my medical consulting rooms". When I arrived, he opened a small closet and took out a blue bag with a Putter, a 9 Iron and a Pitcher and he gave them to me, welcoming me to Pitch and Putt with a big smile. I had never played anything related before and those were my first Pitch and Putt clubs. He told me how the game was played and some details of the trip, but what I remember most was his phrase that said "the Doctors' course is Pitch and Putt and we did not know it !!!" With his vision, he enrolled me on a course, and since then I have not stopped playing. As an anecdote I won my first trophy in 2003, which my father presented to me… I will never forget that day.
Immediately after his return, he began to speak only of Pitch and Putt and the need to create a Chilean federation, promote the sport, prepare the course according to the rules, create clubs and invite many people to join the game, regulating everything to comply with FIPPA requirements and most importantly…. have the vision to create a clear and inheritable strategy of what he considered should be done in time.
Q. Would he be proud of Pitch and Putt in Chile and wider in South America today?
A. Patricio Rubel, current President of the Chilean Federation of Pitch & Putt always says "Fernando must be sitting in a tree looking at us." The work started by my father could have been lost without the presence of Patricio, Juan Morán, FECHIPP Secretary and Don Sergio Cabezas, who are pillars in the continuity and growth of Pitch and Putt in Chile.
All of them, since the death of my father, have led the Federation along the path that he mentioned many times and, without a doubt, many other people who appreciated it have also done so.
Chile currently has Pitch and Putt clubs that carry out their own Tournaments, we have Team Tournaments, players that participate in International events, a Handicap system integrated into FIPPA, an extremely detailed National Ranking system, a Web communication platform and most importantly, about 200 active players, all of the above thanks to the managers of the Federation and the Clubs that have Pitch and Putt courses, especially Colegio di Medico, Estadio Espanol and Aconcagua. At the international level, FECHIPP tries to deliver all its experience to new countries that want to promote Pitch and Putt and support them in carrying out their first events, such as the first Brazilian Open. This support, I believe that in the same way that my father would have done, inspires trips by Patricio Rubel to the countries to personally project the concept of Pitch and Putt and the philosophy of FIPPA.
My father would be proud of the current development of the Pitch and Putt under the command of Patricio and Juan but I am also certain that in his mind there would be many things that still have to be done. My very personal opinion is that Pitch and Putt is consolidated among adults and the future path must be urgently for FECHIPP to develop the sport with minors, an area where there are already projects in creation.
Q. What is the situation regarding Covid-19 in Chile?
A. On March 19, Chile had the first person diagnosed with COVID. On April 6 the first deceased person was announced. To date, Chile has 12,306 infected people and 174 people have died. Chile is a country 4,300 km long, so Covid's control is complex. Different regions are in quarantine and in large cities, the quarantine is by areas of the City. Health authorities indicate that the worst is yet to come. The peak of infections is expected in the months of May and June.
Q. What impact is it having on Pitch and Putt?
A. All activities related to Pitch and Putt have been stopped for two months. The courses are closed and we believe that it will not be possible to resume the sport for another three or four months. However, Pitch and Putt creates deep friendships and we are in communication and waiting for the moment to see each other again around a Pitch and Putt ball.
