Maru Toledo - A Study of a Sant Cebria Stalwart and World Open winner

Few women in Catalonia have been pioneers in two sports. Maru Toledo was one of the first football players to be part of the FC Barcelona women’s team. Later she was also one of the first and most outstanding players in Catalan Pitch and Putt, winning the second International Ladies Open. Maru kindly gave her recollections to fippa.org.

• How much do you remember of the 2001 International Ladies Open at Sant Cebria?

I remember that everything was very nice, to make a final like this and on my own course. The truth was that I was very excited and for me the important thing was to participate. I had a surprise win; we were practically tied all the way through and in the end at 18, I made a hole in one. Imagine my satisfaction!

• Was it an honour to win the second-ever international Ladies Open?

A great honour and you know that not many women then played but the few that played were very competitive.

• How much did you enjoy playing in the Ireland v. Rest of Europe match at Tolcinasco, Milan in 2000?

Yes, it was a very nice trip. It was also really important because we weren't used to representing Catalan Pitch and Putt either. In Italy it was a very nice match,. We trained very well. We found the players very strong. We had a great time, sportingly and socially. Everything was fantastic.

• Did you play in other international events?

Well, I couldn't play anymore. I continued to play some competitions here at home but, unfortunately, I found a job that didn't allow me to play all the time. I worked all week except Monday and then on Monday there were no competitions. I had to leave competitions for almost 14 years.

• You have performed well in Catalan championships and Maresme Grand Prix events. What is your favourite tournament?

My favorite tournament is always the one I have won, of course. But the ones in which I have always done the best have been here at home, in Sant Cebrià. At the moment all the tournaments I have played have been at home and I feel like any player of any sport when playing at home.

• You were a contemporary of Pilar Montero. How much did the two of you motivate the other?

Obviously when we started in this sport, Pilar Montero dedicated herself 24 hours a day! Well apart from the 4 or 5 hours that she slept - the rest of the hours she spent playing and on different courses! I would train a few times and play with her and I was the eternal second lady. At the championships in Catalonia that I played, I was always second.

• What is your view of how ladies Pitch and Putt has developed in Catalonia over the last 20 years?

Although I have not been able to continue playing, of course I have followed everything and I am happy and proud because really in other sports there are more differences between the men and ladies. Here in the female team lately we have a lot of support and I am quite happy with what I see. Perhaps there are players who are not supported enough, but I think we have moved ahead a lot compared to when I started, 26 years ago.

• What is your view of how ladies Pitch and Putt has developed internationally over the last 20 years?

Obviously, as I have told you, I had to stop playing when these competitions were held. The memory I have was very nice, and what I understand from colleagues and players who have followed, I am very satisfied with the progress.

• Are you still enjoying Pitch and Putt at the present time in Sant Cebria?

Yes, and don’t take Pitch and Putt away from me, because the truth is that I have been retired for about 5 years and my illusion is to come to the Sant Cebrià course every day and obviously for  the tournaments. Of the social club of Sant Cebrià I think I am the champion!

• Tell us a little about Pitch and Putt marathons?

Marathons are, for those of us who like this sport so much, the brotherhood, the collaboration we have, to be here all day with players and we like it so much, and to play three games in a row. We had a great time, the collaboration is great, and since I retired I played them all. It’s a fantastic thing. And we also think a lot about the work we do and this is very positive, whether you play well or badly. It's all about the brotherhood and being with all the teammates and we all like this sport so much. Of course you’re here for lunch or breakfast and we’re talking Pitch and Putt all the time. It's very nice.

Pocas mujeres en Cataluña han sido pioneras en dos deportes. Maru Toledo fue de las primeras jugadoras de fútbol integrante del equipo femenino del FC Barcelona. • ¿Qué recuerdas del Open Internacional de Mujeres de 2001 en Sant Cebrià?

Recuerdo que todo fue muy bonito, hacer una final así y en mi campo, pues la verdad que tenía mucha ilusión y para mí lo importante era participar. Tuve una sorpresa al ganar, íbamos prácticamente empatadas todo el partido y al final al 18 acabé con un hole in one. Imagínate mi satisfacción.

• Fue un honor ganar el segundo Open femenino internacional?

Un gran honor y ya sabes que entonces no jugaban muchas mujeres pero las pocas que jugábamos éramos muy competitivas.

• Te gustó jugar el partido Irlanda contra el resto de Europa a Tolcinasco, Milán en 2000?

Si fue un viaje muy bonito. También era realmente importante porque tampoco estábamos acostumbradas a representar al Pitch and Putt de Cataluña. En Italia fue un partido muy bonito, entrenamos muy bien, encontraron a la gente muy firme . Nos lo pasamos muy bien deportivamente y cordialmente. Todo fue fantástico.

• Jugaste en otras competiciones internacionales?

Pues no pude jugar más, porque continué jugando alguna competición aquí en casa pero desafortunadamente encontré un trabajo que entonces no me permitía jugar, trabajaba toda la semana excepto los lunes y entonces el lunes no había competiciones. Tuve que dejar la competición casi durante 14 años.

• Has tenido un buen rendimiento en los Campeonatos de Cataluña y el Gran Premio del Maresme. ¿Cuál es tu torneo favorito?

Mi torneo favorito siempre es el que he ganado, evidentemente. Pero en los que siempre he hecho mejor resultado han sido aquí en casa, en Sant Cebrià. Aquí de momento todos los torneos que he hecho pues estoy en casa y me siento como cualquier jugador de cualquier deporte cuando juega en casa.

• Has sido contemporánea de Pilar Montero. Esto motivó a las dos, una con el otro?

Evidentemente cuando comenzamos en este deporte Pilar Montero se dedicaba las 24 horas, bien aparte de las 4 o 5 que dormía, el resto de horas se las pasaba jugando y en diferentes campos. Yo entrenaba algunas veces y jugaba con ella y yo era la eterna secundona. A los campeonatos de Cataluña que jugué siempre quedé segunda.

• ¿Qué opinión tienes de cómo se ha desarrollado el Pitch and Putt femenino en Cataluña durante los últimos 20 años?

Aunque yo no he podido seguir jugando, claro lo he seguido todo y estoy contenta y orgullosa porque realmente en otros deportes hay más diferencias entre el masculino y el femenino, aquí en el femenino últimamente senos apoya bastante y estoy bastante contenta de lo que veo. Quizás hay jugadoras que no se encuentran apoyadas suficientemente, pero yo creo que hemos ido bastante adelante de cuando empecé yo hace 26 años.

• ¿Qué opinión tienes de cómo se ha desarrollado internacionalmente el Pitch and Putt femenino durante los últimos 20 años?

Evidentemente como os he dicho, tuve que dejar de jugar cuando se hacían estas competiciones. Yo el recuerdo que tengo fue muy bonito, y lo que tengo entendido por compañeras y jugadoras que han seguido, estoy muy satisfecha de las noticias que tengo.

• Aún estás disfrutando de Pitch and Putt en Sant Cebrià?

Pues sí, y eso que no me lo quiten, porque la verdad es que hace unos 5 años que estoy jubilada y mi ilusión es cada día venir al campo de Sant Cebrià y evidentemente cuando hacen los torneos. Del social del club de Sant Cebrià pienso que soy la campeona.

• Háblanos un poco sobre las maratones Pitch and Putt?

Las maratones son, para los que nos gusta tanto este deporte, la hermandad, la colaboración que hacemos, de estar aquí todo el día con jugadores y que nos gusta tanto, y hacer tres partidos seguidos. Nos lo pasamos muy bien, la colaboración es fantástica, al menos desde que me he jubilado que los he jugado todos. Y además pensamos mucho con la tarea que hacemos y eso es muy positivo, esto también te hace que, juegues bien o mal, pero la hermandad y estar con todos los compañeros y que todo el mundo nos gusta tanto este deporte. Claro estás aquí comiendo o almorzando y estamos hablando todo el tiempo de Pitch & Putt. Es muy bonito.

• Què recordes de l'Open Internacional de Dones de 2001 a Sant Cebrià?

Recordo que tot va ser molt maco, fer una final així i al meu camp, doncs la veritat que tenia molta il·lusió i per mi l’important era participar. Vaig tenir una sorpresa en guanyar, anàvem pràcticament empatades tot el partit i al final al 18 vaig acabar amb un hole in one.  Imagina’t la meva satisfacció.

• Va ser un honor guanyar el segon Open femení internacional?

Un gran honor i ja saps que llavors no jugaven gaires dones però les poques que jugàvem erem molt competitives.

• Et va agradar jugar al partit Irlanda contra la resta d’Europa a Tolcinasco, Milà el 2000?

Si va ser un viatge molt maco . També era realment important perquè tampoc estàvem acostumades a representar el Pitch and Putt de Catalunya. A Itàlia va ser un partit  molt maco, vam entrenar molt bé, van trobar a la gent molt ferma… Ens ho vam passar molt bé esportivament i cordialment. Tot va ser fantàstic.

• Vas jugar en altres competicions internacionals?

Doncs no vaig poder jugar més, perquè vaig continuar jugant alguna competició aquí a casa però desafortunadament vaig tenir un treball que llavors no hem permetia jugar, treballava tota la setmana excepte els dilluns i llavors el dilluns no hi havia competicions. Vaig haver de deixar la competició gairebé durant 14 anys.

• Has tingut un bon rendiment als Campionats de Catalunya i al Gran Premi del Maresme. Quin és el teu torneig preferit?

El meu torneig favorit sempre és el que he guanyat, evidentment. Però els que sempre he fet millor resultat ha estat aquí a casa, a Sant Cebrià. Aquí de moment tots els tornejos que he fet doncs estic a casa i hem sento com qualsevol jugador de qualsevol esport quan juga a casa.

• Has estat contemporània de Pilar Montero. Això  us va motivar a les dues, una amb  l’altre?

Encara que jo no he pogut seguir jugant, clar ho he seguit tot i estic contenta i orgullosa perquè realment en altres esports hi han més diferències entre el masculí i el femení, aquí al femení últimament se’ls recolza  bastant i estic bastant contenta del que veig. Potser hi ha jugadores que no es troben recolzades suficient, però jo crec que hem anat bastant endavant de quan vaig començar jo fa 26 anys.

• Quina opinió tens de com s’ha desenvolupat internacionalment el Pitch and Putt femení durant els darrers 20 anys?

Evidentment com us he dit, vaig haver de deixar de jugar quan es feien aquestes competicions. Jo el record que tinc va ser molt maco, i el que tinc entès per companyes i jugadores que han seguit, estic molt satisfeta de les notícies que tinc.

• Encara estàs gaudint de Pitch and Putt a Sant Cebrià?

Doncs si,i això que no m’ho treguin, perquè la veritat es que fa uns 5 anys que estic jubilada i la meva il·lusió es cada dia venir al camp de Sant Cebrià i evidentment quan fan els tornejos. Del social del club de Sant Cebrià penso que sóc campiona.

• Parla’ns una mica sobre les maratons Pitch and Putt?

Les maratons són, pels que ens agrada tant aquest esport, la germanor, la col·laboració que fem, d’estar aquí tot el dia amb jugadors i que ens agrada tant, i fer tres partits seguits. Ens ho passem molt bé, la col·laboració es fantàstica, almenys des de que m’he jubilat que els he jugat tots. És una cosa fantàstica. I a més pensem molt amb la tasca que fem i això és molt positiu, això també et fa que, juguis bé o malament, però la germanor i estar amb tots els companys i que tothom ens agrada tant aquest esport. Clar estàs aquí dinant o esmorzant i estem parlant tota l’estona de Pitch&Putt. És molt maco.
