  Fernando Cano - experience counts

Having carded a superb final round 47 in 2025 for 144 overall and a Catalan Senior Open win at BonaArea, Fernado Cano retained that title in 2026 at Vallromanes. This time it was much closer. Following opening rounds of 53 and 54, Cano actually trailed fellow Catalan Olegario Arnau by six strokes on Saturday night.

Battling illness and injury, Fernando's expectations were relatively low. "It's been a pretty rough tournament for me, because I've only started playing a little."

3rd in 2023 at Hcp1 on 155 (beaten on final 18 for second), Fernando produced a splendid closing round of 50 at Vallromanes to triumph by two shots from a couple of longstanding Catalan collegues Joan Bertran and Amador Rodriguez.

The Inaugural World Strokeplay champion (in 2009 at Montpelier), Fernando was in reflective mood having collected his Over-55 trophy. "It's been hard for me, let's put it that way, and I've been coming back little by little."

3rd in the 2025 overall WPPT Catalan Master at La Garriga, Fernando attributed his latest success to top-class pitching on Sunday. "At the end of it all, the key to the last round was the that, in the last eight holes, I was able to make greens and the putts went in."

The 2006 World Cup and 2010 European Team championship winner is still ultra-competitive. "I'm super happy to have beaten these international gentlemen."
