Mathieu Cantet - La Rochelle Sud awaits

We are delighted to hear from CPPF Regional Vice President Mathieu Cantet as La Rochelle Sud prepares to host the inaugural French Open International Pairs in September.

fippa.org: How are preparations progressing for the first French International Pairs tournament?

Mathieu Cantet: Preparations are going very well. We are working closely with the CPPF and the Golf La Rochelle Sud team to ensure a well-organized event that meets international standards. Player hospitality, the logistics of the three-round format, and the overall atmosphere around the competition are all top priorities.

What is the motivation for the event and how did it come into being?

One of our main motivations is to showcase the La Rochelle Sud course, a young but ambitious venue with a strong competitive future. From the very beginning, we envisioned it as a course capable of hosting major Pitch and Putt events. Launching the first French edition of the International Pairs is a way to bring that ambition to life and to position La Rochelle Sud as a key venue on both the national and international scene.
It’s also a great opportunity to promote an innovative team format that’s both strategic and social, and to bring fresh energy to the sport in France.

Do you expect a significant number of local entrants?

Yes, we’ve already seen strong interest from players in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region and other parts of France. The team format appeals to a wide variety of player profiles, which helps generate excellent local participation.

How many entrants are you expecting from abroad?

We expect to welcome between 15 and 20 teams from abroad. Several contacts have already been made with international clubs and federations through FIPPA. This international dimension is essential to enhance the competitive experience and foster meaningful exchanges across countries.

Tell us a little about the La Rochelle Sud course.

The La Rochelle Sud course is technical, varied, and very well-suited to Pitch and Putt. It offers a great balance of precision and strategy, with well-defended greens and a beautiful natural setting. It was designed with a competitive spirit, while remaining accessible to players of all levels. We're proud to introduce it on the international stage.

What benefits do you think the tournament will provide for the sport in France and for the CPPF?

This tournament is a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness of Pitch and Putt in France, attract new players, and promote CPPF-affiliated clubs. It also showcases the momentum and development of the sport in our country, while strengthening ties with the international community. This kind of event serves as a strong platform to structure and grow the game nationwide.

What can visitors to La Rochelle Sud for the tournament expect? On course and off course?

On the course, visitors can expect high-level competition in a friendly, festive atmosphere, with entertainment, a prize ceremony, and plenty of moments to share with fellow players. Off the course, the La Rochelle region is a fantastic destination – full of charm, history, gastronomy, ocean views, and nearby islands. We’re offering a truly memorable sporting and touristic experience – the kind that makes people want to come back.
